The Vietnam War

Where -  Vietnam, Laos and Cambodia

When -  1955 to April 30, 1975.

Parties involved – North Vietnam fought South Vietnam .

The Vietcong – south Vietnamese communists who fought against the anti communist forces in the south using guerrilla warfare tactics

Why – The South wanted a democracy and fought against communist North Vietnam. The South was ultimately  supported by the United States and other member nations of the Southeast Asia Treaty Organization (SEATO) whereas the North was supported by its communist allies.

Tactics – The  North engaged in a more traditional battle plan with large scale military units of foot being deployed.

The South used superior air resources with jet bombers and choppers . They deployed fire power to conduct search and destroy missions with air strikes , artillery, and ground forces of trained soldiers .

Finish – A peace treaty was signed in January 1973 but fighting continued up to april 1975 when North Vietnam captured Saigon.

Outcome – North and South Vietnam were reunified the following year.

Soldiers of both sides were unified into one country of Vietnam .

Australian soldiers were deployed to support the South as a member of SEATO and an ally of South Vietnam and the USA . It was a very contentious involvement with young Australian men being conscripted to fight a war in a foreign country for US vested interests   that posed no threat to Australia. It galvanised political debate , with a prevalence of conscientious objectors and street marches and vocal dissent. Eventually conscription ceased and Australian soldiers were withdrawn .

Today Vietnam Veterans take their place to march with other soldiers of all conflicts in the Anzac Day Parade.
